It's a lot of work to create custom wood and iron work and I have fallen way behind on blog postings BUT "like" Wood Iron Studio on Facebook and keep track of where I am!

Another beautiful coffee table just left my Wake Forest, NC studio!
This is a 38" x 38" wide by 17" tall piece topped with a 3/8" tempered glass to really show off  (and protect) the natural shine and patina of the wood.
Created in Rustic/Modern Butcher Block style, this latest table features 4 Butcher Block sections
I only use wood from trees grown in the United States. 12 different woods were selected varying in color and wood grain. Naturally aged oak beams surround the blocks to give added contrast and strength. Natural imperfections such as knots were left in this piece to add character.
All the steel for the legs was hand bent,twisted and cold rolled. This makes them high profile, low impact and the smoothest legs in town! Something new that I'm doing is labeling all the wood used. So now you can enjoy this table visually and learn about the wood used to create it.
All work is Signed and Dated so that you know you are getting an authentic Wood Iron Studio custom piece!

The finished look at the Larkspur Salon

The finishing touches to the walls I built from reclaimed wood highlight the finished look of the Larkspur Salon and Spa.
The wood has a warmer feel than ceramic or tile walls.


The lockers are sitting on metal bases that I designed and fabricated, raising them to customer height.

 After the owners of the Larkspur Salon and Spa, saw my work at the Centrex office, they hired me to create the same kind of rustic look for their Spa in Raleigh.

Wall for salon

Using rough wood that I have resurrected, reconditioned and recycled, I am continuing to create additional similar work in other areas of the salon.

These were partitions for the salon stations. Lights, mirror and counter tops will be added. I made one 8'x8' and six 5'x8' sections.

In keeping with the overall feel for the Salon, I also added a sign board....it's about 2.5 x 2.5  in size.

The entrance will be highlighted with my wall made from barn wood. It's 8" x 14" in size.

Lots of catching up with projects and news!

It's been a crazy 12 months with jobs taking me everywhere, leaving no time to post and catch up. So I'll try to do a little of that now.

This company sign with steel letters was built to complement an aged pallet wall I built earlier this year for them.
I used naturally aged hardwoods for light to dark contrast. 

More catching up in the next few days!
 

A unique realtor's office

The project for a unique realtor's office completed in record time to  specifications of both the client and the designer!

In this project I combined both metal and wood fabrication to achieve the desired effects and results.  

Staining metal

Sometimes in the course of fabricating a custom piece, color may be needed for the final design. In those cases, I'll be working quickly and using both hands to work with the color stains to  produce a unique mosaic of colors suited to what a client may request. The end results can be pretty spectacular.

This photo was taken outside the shop where the nice day was perfect for carrying out the procedure on a 12 foot section of steel.

The iron gate-in or out

Well it's been a very busy few months and I am not the best photographer but trying to catch up on what I have been doing. Here is a project gate that I completed to be used in the home as a puppy gate.

Art in wood and iron

I combined wood and iron together to create my art piece "Iron Roses" to showcase the two mediums.

This is an area of welding and woodworking that I really enjoy! This 16 " high iron and wood art piece was juried into the Franklin County Arts Council art exhibit and can be seen Nov 17-Jan 2 at the FCAC building at 106 Justice St in Louisburg, NC.

It is one of a kind and for sale for only $125.00!

Watching my creations come to life with GEO PIRATES

The client I fabricated the swords for (see last post) sent me the link to the results and seeing my polished steel swords come to life in their kid's program is very cool.

Sword fabrication

I get to make some pretty cool stuff and recently I was asked to hand fabricate 6 swords for a productions video. Polishing steel takes some serious elbow grease but the end results were pretty amazing. More photos coming. The leather for the grips was added by the customer.

The functionality of gates

Gates are everywhere and nothing is more functional that a traditional steel gate! Here is a picture of a gate I made for a warehouse. 

It's 20 ft wide, re-greasable hinges, and all parts were powder coated. Sturdy and solid metal  welding work. 

Keep an eye out for some upcoming fun stuff-the prop swords I just fabricated for a company!

So here I am helping Franklin County Art Council Board member Steve Filarsky

hang the first quilt block for Franklin County.

This location is at the FCAC art building at 106 Justice St in Louisburg, NC.

Only one drill!

It's 4' x 4' and made on special MDO signboard with 2 x 4 bracing all around. I think we'll need a bucket truck to hang the 8' x 8' ones!

Pretty cool-this is the first Quilt Trail east of the NC mountains and they hope to expand out.

My what big teeth you have......

I get asked to do the craziest things!

My years working with many of the big stage productions has given me the opportunity to work and problem solve with wood, metals, fiberglass, and many other materials. Some conventional, some not. Toss in all the electrical and mechanical inventions and solutions I've come up with and you have, as far as I'm concerned, the perfect job!

So if you want to know what these teeth are doing at my shop, you'll just have to keep checking back to see my progress. Let's just say that it concerns a mascot of one of the local universities.......

Creating a safety fence from the ground up

 Well it's been pretty busy around the shop but here are some photos of a recent job where I made, painted and installed a  series of guidance fencing for a loading ramp near the RDU airport in Raleigh.

The jobs can range from the artistic to the functional.

Bringing old wrought iron back to life

The old wrought iron gates and fences are disappearing across the country. Some are re-purposed but others wind up in the dumps or rusting in the grass.

My mom found this one a while ago at a flea market and it sat until I figured that the perfect Mother's Day present would be to do some minor repairs and makes hinges and latches and hang it in her garden.

She sent me this photo. Hard to find anything much prettier!

The new Green-Metal Trees

This is one of several large metal trees that I fabricated for a stage production. I'll post the very cool "grass" that I also fabricated later.
What is difficult to see is the intricate "bark" that I created on the tree limbs.

 I do a lot of these creative pieces in between the functional ironwork that I also do. I'll post photos shortly of a commercial rail job that I just completed at the Raleigh Durham airport.

Stainless Steel railings

I fabricated these stainless steel railing (there were two sets) for a bar in Atlanta where the client wanted good looks but not something too flowery :-)

Stainless steel is a challenge to weld but the finished structure looks polished and finished.
